“How to Spell” speaks to a cycle of identity reclamation that challenges the stories fed to us – who we are, where we’re going, what we ought to be, a metaphorical death of a past identity, and a growing into a new form of being. The paintings chosen for this show capture moments in time of taking back and defining my identities – my queerness, the person I wanted to evolve into, the parts of me that are gloriously unladylike. These pieces – all my pieces – serve as a challenge to what queer and/or Puerto Rican art can look like.

In honor of the 32nd World AIDS Day, this show features artwork by John Suro and Jonathan Joseph, both of whose work reflects on HIV/AIDS and the communities most affected by it. John’s large scale installations and sculptures paired with Jonathan’s paintings reveal truths about one of the deadliest and long-standing epidemics in human history.
